Legal departments are spending more carefully on outside work. The Harbor 2025 Law Department Survey, conducted with CLOC, found that the share of departments projecting higher outside counsel spend fell from 58% to 37% in a single year. At the same time, respondents to the Thomson Reuters Future of Professionals Report 2025 expect AI to save professionals about five hours per week within the next year.
The gap sits between those two numbers. Review teams can surface findings faster than before, but much of that value stays inside the review platform until someone translates it into an update that legal counsel can read, question, and act on. Clients judge the work by that update, not by the speed of the review behind it.
Agentic AI review is the use of AI agents to carry out connected document review tasks, such as coding, summarizing, and organizing evidence, and to assemble the results into structured outputs like a case status report, with each statement linked to its source documents and approved by a human reviewer.
