As generative artificial intelligence (gen AI) developed, a few early gaffes by lawyers submitting nonexistent citations created skepticism around whether the emerging technology belonged in the profession.

By now, however, gen AI is a part of daily operations for many law firms. Twenty-six percent of legal professionals say they were using gen AI in 2025, according to a report from Thomson Reuters, up from 14% in 2024. Those who have yet to embrace it risk falling behind. Firms must quickly learn its strengths (to drive productivity) and weaknesses (to mitigate substantial risks).

To that end, Honigman’s intellectual property department recently held its second annual summit on gen AI and IP. Bringing together partners, associates, and operational leaders from across the firm, the summit focused on advanced prompting, ethical compliance, and strategic innovation.
