The rise of generative artificial intelligence has spurred the creation of increasing amounts of data for legal professionals and specialists to sift through in the already data-heavy process of e-discovery. That expanding volume of data has created a heightened need for digital forensic specialists, according to Legalweek speaker and Purpose Legal senior vice president of digital forensics Jerry Bui.

Bui sat down with Legaltech News to discuss whether the legal industry is prepared for how fast data is growing, as well as the challenges of deciphering intent from altered digital media.

Bui is set to speak at the “From Deflategate to Deepfakes: Data Discovery with Celebrities and Revised Rules” session March 11 at Legalweek 2026 in New York.

Can you talk about how the need or the significance of digital forensics has changed over the years, especially with the emergence of gen AI?

In general, the digital transformation that a lot of companies are going through increases the need for digital forensics because the digital realm is less widely understood compared to the old paper world where you can actually put your hands on paper and filing cabinets, and the way of doing business is much more virtual and therefore digitized.
