Officials from the UN, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) gathered Monday to discuss multilateral AI policy.
The New York City Bar Association’s “UN Summit of the Future: International Regulation of AI” webinar examined the progress and challenges of developing and implementing international regulations on AI.
Challenges in Adopting a Global AI Policy
Speakers noted that there is ongoing debate over whether detailed regulation is necessary or if a broad legal framework just needs to be established.
“I’m not saying that the GDPR is not a good law for what it does, but is it readily applicable in a developing country? I don’t know, that’s a hard question,” said David Satola, the World Bank’s lead counsel on technology and innovation.
Satola added global AI policy is also challenging because countries may approach certain digital and human rights issues differently.
