Chief operating officers and administrative executives at law firms see partners as the biggest roadblock to implementing tech upgrades at their organizations, according to the Blickstein Group’s “Law Firm COO Survey” published last week.

The Blickstein Group surveyed 158 law firm COOs and principal administrators in North America. Over a quarter (28.2%) of survey respondents said that partners as a whole are the biggest obstacle to implementing changes at their law firm.

Blickstein Group CEO Brad Blickstein told Legaltech News that he’s observed partners favor a more traditional system of work that they’ve always engaged with.

“Most partners at firms are not vocalizing that they want better technology because I think that they like the status quo; if it was up to them, they wouldn’t change the way they do their legal work much at all,” Blickstein told Legaltech News.

The survey found that although COOs and other administrators noted that making technology upgrades were a key initiative for 2025, these law firm leaders are saying that partners for the most part are slowing or complicating the process.
