As AI technology in healthcare becomes more deeply involved in the complex, high-stakes tasks of diagnosis and treatment planning, traditional lines of accountability will become less clear. Where does the buck stop for AI-supported medical care?

As AI in healthcare moves from simple documentation and administrative tasks into high-level clinical decision making, leaders and clinicians must determine how much human oversight is enough when AI influences direct patient care. Ultimately, who holds final responsibility for AI-supported medical care? 

Concerns from inside the AI industry underscore the question: former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon recently resigned over concerns that AI is developing too quickly and with too little oversight. Days later, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for the industry to slow development and implement independent safety evaluations  – a proposal which was supported by other AI leaders.
