Extract from Keith Maziarek’s article “Don’t Believe the Hype: Cost Savings Will Remain Elusive in the Gen AI Era”
As the gen AI era continues to materialize in Big Law, it has become impossible to have any exploration of its impacts without the conversation quickly turning to the significant cost savings that legal departments expect to capture thanks to the productivity benefits it can deliver.
One element of these conversations that seems to be lost in translation is that gen AI, while certainly impressive, does not yield identical results across the complexity spectrum of legal work. As matters and workflows become more complex, potential for cost savings becomes more elusive.
As unsettling as that concept may be, I always advise law firms and legal departments to assess value based on both qualitative and quantitative drivers.
