OpenAI and Microsoft are facing another major copyright lawsuit, this time from nine regional newspaper publishers that are demanding damages exceeding $10 billion.

The publishers—led by lead plaintiff California Newspaper Partnership, owner of the Los Angeles Daily News and Orange County Register—allege that the tech companies “willfully” infringed their intellectual property to build profitable AI products.

The 57-page complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, joins an avalanche of litigation that could determine whether OpenAI’s business model survives in its current form; OpenAI now faces 18 copyright lawsuits around the world, the most of any company.

The publishers are being represented by Washington, D.C.-based Rothwell, Figg, Ernst & Manbeck.
