On Sept. 5, Israel, the U.S., the U.K, the European Union and a number of additional European countries signed a treaty on artificial intelligence put forth by the human rights organization the Council of Europe.

Officially named the “Council of Europe Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law,” the treaty, also known as a convention, aims to promote certain principles in AI governance. It includes a number of provisions that participating countries must enact or maintain through laws, regulations or administrative measures.

Described as the “first-ever international legally binding treaty” on AI, the convention was negotiated by 46 Council of Europe countries, the EU and 11 nonmember states, including Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, Mexico and the U.S., among others.
