Another season, another OpenAI model. On Sept. 12, the artificial intelligence developer announced a new generative AI model series called OpenAI o1, unofficially and colloquially known as Strawberry, that improves its accuracy by reasoning first before responding to a problem or prompt.

“We trained these models to spend more time thinking through problems before they respond, much like a person would,” OpenAI said in a blog post introducing OpenAI o1. “Through training, they learn to refine their thinking process, try different strategies, and recognize their mistakes.”

OpenAI o1 comes about four months since OpenAI introduced another model, GPT-4o, that is faster and more accurate than previous GPT-4 iterations, and can process multimedia. Unlike GPT-4o, OpenAI o1 is, for now, text only. And because of its ability to reason before it responds, it is slower than other OpenAI models.
