Corporate legal departments are thinking too narrowly about AI if their strategy begins and ends with making lawyers more efficient, according to legal technology expert Richard Susskind, who says the real opportunity is to build systems that prevent much of that legal work from arising in the first place.
Speaking on Axiom’s Insights on Legal Tech podcast, Susskind urged general counsel to prepare for a future in which legal expertise is increasingly embedded in business systems rather than delivered through traditional legal departments or outside counsel. The shift, he said, means legal leaders should focus not only on today’s productivity gains but also on redesigning how legal services are delivered over the next decade.
