The ACEDS New York Metro Chapter is proud to celebrate James Sherer, Partner at BakerHostetler, as its Member of the Year in recognition of his leadership, generosity, and years of meaningful service to the chapter.
For many years, James has been a steady and valued presence on the NY Metro Chapter Board. He has led sessions, helped develop thoughtful program ideas, hosted chapter events, supported membership growth, encouraged engagement from his colleagues and team, and consistently brought the kind of energy and insight that help a chapter thrive.
James’ impact is especially clear in the range of conversations he has helped bring to ACEDS members. He has been helping the ACEDS NY Metro community engage with artificial intelligence since before 2019, well before AI became the daily business and legal headline it is today. He has also helped advance discussions around information governance, legal technology, data privacy, risk, cybersecurity, emerging technology, and the evolving ways legal and business teams work together.
“James has given so much to ACEDS over the years, and I’ve been fortunate to get to know him not only as a chapter leader, but as a friend,” said Maribel Rivera, VP of Strategy and Client Engagement at ACEDS.
“He brings generosity, insight, and genuine care to this community. His impact on the New York Metro Chapter is significant, but what makes James so special is how he shows up for people.”
That breadth is part of what makes James’ contribution so valuable. He does more than spot important topics. He helps make complex issues practical, accessible, and relevant for a community of professionals working across law, data, technology, compliance, investigations, operations, and business.

James has spent years giving his time, energy, and expertise to help others learn, connect, and succeed,” shared Derek Stegelmeier, ACEDS NY Metro Chapter President. “He embodies the very best of what ACEDS represents, and this recognition is richly deserved.”
Beyond ACEDS, James is respected for the work he does as a lawyer, advisor, colleague, and leader. He brings curiosity, clarity, and generosity to complex issues, whether working with clients, collaborating with peers, mentoring teammates, or supporting the broader legal community.
