As AI tools become embedded in everyday legal work, speakers at the CLOC Global Institute in Chicago urged legal professionals to not let automation sand down the judgment, personality, and trust that still drive careers inside legal departments.

That tension between efficiency and authenticity surfaced repeatedly during several sessions earlier this month at the corporate legal operations conference, where panelists argued that in-house professionals are increasingly being valued not only for technical skills but for the way they communicate, build relationships, and lead through mission-driven work.

During a session titled “Building a Personal Brand in the Age of AI,” speakers Louisa Toy, program manager II at Amazon.com Inc., and Tanya Svoboda, senior content manager at Workday, warned that overreliance on AI-generated communication can quietly erode credibility, especially inside organizations where reputations are formed long before someone posts on LinkedIn.
